Ancient Icing & Tiger Tales
By Hugh Morris

Oldest Cake

The Willis Museum in Basingstoke, England, is home to what’s believed to be the oldest complete wedding cake in the world. The cake was made in 1898 and still holds its shape, though it has browned with age. Topped with a floral display, its only flaw is a crack in the icing caused by a bomb blast during WW2.

“A syringe once inserted into the cake revealed the centre to be moist,” says museum curator Sue Tapliss. The cake was donated to the museum by the daughter of the baker who had made it and displayed it in his bakery shop window.

Tiger Tales

A young reporter went to a retirement home to interview an aged but legendary explorer. The reporter asked the old man to tell him the most frightening experience he’d ever had.

The old explorer said, “Once I was trying to photograph a Bengal tiger in the jungles of India. I was on a narrow path and my faithful porter was behind me. Suddenly the largest tiger I’ve ever seen appeared on the path right in front of us. I turned to grab my camera only to find the porter had fled. The tiger leapt towards me with a mighty ROARRRR! I soiled myself.”

The reporter said, “That’s not surprising. Under those circumstances anyone would have done the same.”

The old explorer said, “No, not then – just now when I went ROARRRR!”
